Riccardo Calvani is a medical biotechnologist from Italy, with a PhD in Physiopathology of Nutrition and Metabolism earned at Catholic University of Rome. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Aging Research Center of Karolinska Institutet, in the research group of prof. Laura Fratiglioni.

Riccardo’s main research interest is the identification of biomarkers for various age-related conditions, including musculoskeletal aging, malnutrition, sarcopenia, frailty, type 2 diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. In this context, together with colleagues from KI and other international Institutions, they developed novel methods for biomarker discovery using multi-marker approaches coupled with multivariate analytical approaches. Their biomarker discovery process has been testing the “geroscience” hypothesis. According to geroscience, the susceptibility to most chronic diseases of aging derives from perturbations in the biological drivers of aging, the so-called “hallmarks of aging”. Thus, their approach incorporates a more comprehensive, multivariable landscape that encompasses as many contributing factors as possible.

Following his previous experience in international projects on aging, nutrition and metabolism, Riccardo hase been developing novel analytical strategies to assess the association between diet, physical activity/exercise and biological markers in older people at risk for malnutrition.
