Identifying compensatory mechanisms against dementia in diabetes
PI: Weili Xu
Researcher in Medicine
Diabetes and prediabetes are associated with an increased risk of dementia, which has posed a tremendous burden on our aging society. The goal of this project is to test the hypothesis that cognitive reserve, low vascular burden, a healthy diet and optimal antidiabetic treatments may mitigate cognitive decline and delay dementia onset in older adults with diabetes (including type 2 diabetes and prediabetes).
Findings from this project may lead to the establishment of life-course strategies with individual, clinical and social dimensions to prevent dementia in people with diabetes, two of the most common disorders worldwide.
This project is funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR).
