Kristina Johnell is the Division Head of the Aging Research Center (ARC) and the Deputy Head of Department of neurobiology, care sciences and society (NVS), Karolinska Institutet. She is Professor in geriatric pharmacoepidemiology and a licensed pharmacist.

She has scientific, pedagogical and leadership qualifications:

  • Kristina’s scientific production has led to over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 2 book chapters and several reports and popular science presentations.
  • Under her supervision, 5 PhD students have completed their studies. She is currently the main supervisor of 1 PhD student and co-supervisor of 5 students.
  • Kristina has received grants from The Swedish Research Council, The Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (Forte) and from several other funding sources
  • She teaches in geriatric pharmacology at first, second and third level university studies as well as to health care professionals and non-academic organisations, such as senior citizens’ associations.
  • Kristina is the Division Head of ARC (about 90 co-workers), where she is also one of the research team leaders.
  • She is also Deputy Head of Department of neurobiology, care sciences and society (about 520 co-workers).
  • Her current and past memberships in Steering groups and committees include the Executive board for the Strategic Research Program in Epidemiology, the Center for Alzheimer Research, the Academic Center for Geriatric Dentistry and the Ethical Review Board

Research description

Kristina’s major research field is geriatric pharmacoepidemiology and specific areas of research include:

  • Inappropriate drug use in older people
  • Adverse drug reactions in elderly persons
  • Drug therapy in people with dementia
  • Drug treatment at end-of-life
  • Inequalities in older people’s drug therapy
  • Decision support for drug treatment of elderly patients
  • Register-based geriatric pharmacoepidemiology
