Giola SantoniGiola Santoni is working as PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Laura Fratiglioni. Giola’s doctoral project is “How well and how long are we aging? Capturing the complexity of health trajectories of older adults.”

In her studies she showed that both prevalence and incidence of disability remained stable over the last two decades in an urban Swedish population, with a trend toward a slow decline. Mortality remained steady among disabled persons but decreased among persons without disability, suggesting that increased life expectancy during the last two decades may be essentially driven by longer lives of functionally independent people. She also observed that age 80-85 is a transitional period when major health changes take place. Until age 80, most people do not have functional impairment or disability, despite the presence of chronic disorders. Disability becomes common only after age 90. This implies an increasing need of medical care after age 70, whereas social care, including institutionalization, becomes a necessity only in nonagenarians. Moreover, she assessed both the medical and functional health dimensions of a heterogeneous group of adults from 60 to 100 years, and traced intra-individual-level changes longitudinally. To that end, She developed a health assessment tool (HAT) that can be easily and quickly administered at the community level. Giola is also interested in studying key determinants of health trajectories and longevity in older adults.

Giola Santoni has a background in engineering and statistics. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Pisa, Italy. She subsequently worked for several years as an engineer before returning to studying. She received her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, USA. Simultaneously, she also received her certificate in Applied Statistics from the same university. From 2010-2013 she was employed as research assistant at the Aging Research Center (ARC).

Giola also works with the data management group, coordinating data cleaning and storage. She also work on the creation of an harmonized SNAC database in collaboration with the other three SNAC centers (Blakinge, Nordanstig, and Skåne).
