Medical education

1980–1985: Bachelor Degree in medicine, Shandong Medical University, Jinan, China

1987–1990: Master Degree in medical epidemiology, Tianjin Medical University, China

1996–1999: Doctoral Degree in epidemiology and biostatistics, Tongji Medical University, Wuhan, China

2001–2004: PhD in geriatric epidemiology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden

2005–2006: Postdoctoral Fellow, National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Maryland, USA

Research focuses and interests. Since 1999, Dr Qiu has focused his research on the epidemiology of brain aging, dementia, and functional disability. He has used population-based databases from several large national studies, including the Kungsholmen Project (KP), Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K)/SNAC-K MRI Project, and Swedish Brain Power Project. Dr Qiu’s research topics include genetic (e.g., APOE genotype and familial aggregation), environmental (e.g., education, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors), and medical (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease) factors and their interactions in brain aging (e.g., neurodegenerative and microvascular diseases), dementia, functional dependence. He is particularly interested in investigating cardiovascular risk factors and vascular mechanisms in pathological brain aging and dysfunction (e.g., cognitive and physical dysfunction) from the life-course perspective, aiming to develop intervention strategies against late-life brain dysfunction. He is in the author of nearly 70 original research articles and more than 30 reviews, book chapters, and editorials in English (H-index, 28) as well as more than 40 articles in Chinese. His research has been supported in part by the Swedish Research Council for Health Working Life and Welfare (Forte), the Swedish Research Council (VR), KI, and private foundations.

Dr Qiu’s research involves collaboration with several institutions and universities: NIA/NIH, USA (Project: The AGES-Reykjavik Study), the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki, Finland (Projects: The National FINRISK Study; The Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Aging and Dementia), National University of Singapore (Project: Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Study), Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Project: Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey), and Jining Medical University and University Hospitals in Shandong, China (Projects: The Confucius Hometown Aging Project; China Health and Nutrition Survey).

Dr Qiu was promoted to associate professor (docent) at KI in 2011 and is a senior university lecturer at KI. Dr Qiu has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at KI on epidemiology, geriatric epidemiology, and aging and health. He is the main supervisor of 4 PhD students (one student successfully defended PhD thesis) and 2 postdoctoral researchers at KI, co-supervisor of 2 PhD students as well as supervisor of master students.
