Anna-Karin Welmer, PhD, is senior lecturer at KI and a physical therapist at Karolinska University Hospital. She was appointed associate professor of aging research at KI in 2014. Anna-Karin is co-principal investigator of the Swedish National study on Aging and care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) population-study. In 2015 she received the Karolina Prize (Karolinapriset; the Karolinska Hospital research prize). She is member of the steering committee for the European MPI-age project. Her research has been supported by various foundations, including Stockholm County Council and the Swedish Research Council (VR). She is currently principal supervisor for one PhD student, and co-supervisor of one PhD student.

Anna-Karin’s primary area of research interest is the epidemiology of physical function, disability and falls in older persons. Currently she is working with the following research lines:

  1. Exploring the complex interactions between biological, demographic, and social factors; chronic diseases; and lifestyle that may explain the development of disability in old age.
  2. The European MPI (Multidimensional Prognostic Indices) project, which aims to use the MPI to predict survival in older individuals.
  3. The body-mind connection.
  4. The VR-financed project: “Thinking, moving, and falling: Early detection of fall-prone phenotypes as targets for primary interventions—a translational study”. The goal of this project is to enable early detection of fall risk in older adults who can be targets for primary interventions.
