Sara AnglemanSara Angleman has a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, England, as well as a Masters in Philosophy in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor´s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA. She began her work at ARC as a postdoc in March 2008, supervised by Prof. Laura Fratiglioni, in the Medical group. Since 2014 she has continued her research in the position of Scientific Coordinator.

Sara´s current primary research areas of interest are in the epidemiology of multimorbidity and disability in the elderly. She is also involved in studying the association of inflammatory-related genes with incident dementia and AD. Since her arrival at ARC, Sara has been awarded grants from FAS (Forskningsrådet för arbetsliv och socialvetenskap), Loo and Hans Ostermans foundation, and Gun och Bertil Stohne foundation.

Previously, Sara completed her doctoral work in Epidemiology as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-University of Cambridge Health Science Scholar Program, collaboratively between these two institutions (in the US and in England). Her doctoral dissertation, entitled “Epidemiological investigation of the relationships between obesity and body composition with disability and health outcomes in older adults”, aimed to explore the relationship between adiposity (or obesity) with disability and with lower-extremity functional limitation (FL). Her dissertation also examined the potential mediating role for inflammation in this association. Her Masters thesis was titled “Novel risk factors for cardiovascular disease: Meta-analyses of the associations of five genetic variants related to markers of inflammation and coronary heart disease.” Prior to her graduate work, Sara also spent two years at the NIH as a member of the NIH Academy, conducting laboratory research while receiving training in how to use biomedical research to address the problem of health disparities by race, gender, and social class in the US.
